About the Role
Join the City of Greater Sudbury’s Financial Services team as an Accountant supporting the Office of the Chief Administrative Officer. This permanent role performs accounting and ERP-related tasks to maintain the general ledger and prepare revenue and expenditure statements for CGS funds and related entities.
This position is eligible for full-time remote work, with the requirement that you can report to a City of Greater Sudbury work location on short notice.
Responsibilities
- Prepare month-end reconciliations, analyze general ledger accounts, and record journal entries while resolving unusual or long-standing reconciling items
- Complete year-end working papers and Financial Information Return (FIR) schedules
- Reconcile and submit revenue confirmation requests to funding organizations, provincial ministries, and federal agencies
- Deposit payments to the appropriate accounts and support accurate financial processing
- Recommend and help implement improvements to accounting business processes and internal controls
- Provide technical support to bookkeepers, analysts, Customer Service Clerks, and operating departments
- Maintain accounts payable cheque number logs and ensure proper accounting of cheque sequences
- Balance inventory, oversee periodic verification, and support petty cash setup/closure and inspections
- Maintain the chart of accounts and PeopleSoft trees used for financial reporting and budgeting
- Troubleshoot ledger and sub-ledger posting issues, run maintenance utilities for BI/AR/AP/payroll and conversion journal postings
- Assist with financial, statistical, and economic studies, reports, and policy support, and relieve the Senior Accountant when needed
Requirements
- Community college diploma in a related field (Accounting, Business Administration, or similar)
- Over 2.5 years up to 5 years of related accounting experience
- Knowledge of Public Sector Accounting Standards and municipal finance functions
- Familiarity with applicable legislation and regulations
- ERP knowledge (PeopleSoft Financials is an asset)
- Ability to analyze accounting data, identify issues, and recommend solutions
- Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and a commitment to confidentiality
- Advanced computer skills in a Windows environment, including spreadsheet and administrative systems
- Excellent English communication (French verbal and written skills are an asset)
Benefits
- Permanent position with full-time remote work eligibility (subject to reporting requirements)
- Pay range: $35.12 to $44.31 per hour (group 12, subject to review)
- Development opportunity pay range (if applicable): $32.74 to $40.69 per hour until minimum qualifications are met
