About the Role
Microsoft Silicon, Cloud Hardware, and Infrastructure Engineering (SCHIE) builds the infrastructure and foundational technologies that power the Intelligent Cloud. Within Hardware Systems, we develop AI-native silicon and hyperscale platforms built for next-generation frontier AI models. The MAIA platform is a key part of this effort, and we’re looking for a Principal engineer to help advance the toolchain that enables accelerator performance and developer productivity.
Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and improve AI accelerator tools and engineering workflows for silicon and hyperscale systems
- Collaborate with hardware, firmware, and software teams to translate platform requirements into practical developer tooling
- Drive performance, reliability, and usability improvements across the toolchain used by internal and partner teams
- Analyze system and workload behavior to identify bottlenecks and propose technical solutions
- Contribute to technical planning, architecture decisions, and long-term roadmap execution
Requirements
- Strong experience building performance-oriented developer tools, SDKs, or system tooling
- Proficiency with one or more programming languages commonly used in systems and tooling (e.g., C++, Python, or similar)
- Experience working with AI/accelerator ecosystems, compilers, runtimes, or performance profiling/analysis
- Ability to collaborate across disciplines (hardware, software, and infrastructure) and communicate effectively
- Demonstrated principal-level impact through complex, cross-team technical delivery
Benefits
- Opportunity to work on mission-critical cloud infrastructure and AI-native platforms
- Collaborate with a high-impact engineering organization supporting global services
- Professional growth through challenging technical problems and cross-functional ownership
