About the Role
We are seeking a Without Compensation Research Data Scientist to support the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Office of Research and Development (ORD). This role contributes to research efforts focused on Veteran-centered, value-driven care by analyzing microbiome sequencing data to help advance patient experiences and outcomes.
Responsibilities
- Process raw microbiome sequencing data using established bioinformatics pipelines
- Perform sequence quality control, taxonomic and functional profiling, and prepare analysis-ready feature tables
- Generate routine statistical summaries, including diversity calculations and basic group comparisons
- Create preliminary visualizations that support downstream modeling led by senior team members
- Assist with transferring, merging, and validating microbiome datasets
Requirements
- Experience working with microbiome or sequencing data and bioinformatics workflows
- Ability to run quality control and generate taxonomic/functional profiles
- Comfort with statistical summaries for diversity and basic comparisons
- Familiarity with preparing analysis-ready feature tables for modeling
