About the Role
Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) is seeking an engineer to help advance automated protein crystal harvesting at the Center for BioMolecular Structure (CBMS). This is a hands-on role focused on developing vision-guided, real-time robotic manipulation for fragile micron-scale protein crystals suspended in liquid droplets.
This is a 2-year term position with the possibility of renewal based on performance and funding availability.
Responsibilities
- Develop closed-loop perception capabilities for detecting and tracking protein crystals in liquid droplets
- Build and deploy computer vision and machine learning components that support robotic manipulation
- Implement visual servoing and robotic control strategies for real-time operation
- Integrate perception, controls, and robotic systems into an automated crystal harvesting platform
- Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team across crystallography, beamline science, mechanical engineering, controls, and data science
Requirements
- Experience building robotic systems with real-time sensing and control
- Proficiency with computer vision and/or machine learning for perception tasks
- Strong understanding of robotic manipulation, visual servoing, and closed-loop control
- Ability to work effectively in a collaborative, multidisciplinary research environment
- Hands-on engineering experience integrating software, controls, and hardware
